May River High School’s cheer team hosted a four-day summer camp this year that drew roughly 80 elementary school participants, the county broadcast reported.
Organizers said the camp teaches foundational sideline cheers and routines as well as tumbling and stunting skills tailored by age: younger campers work on forward rolls and handstands, while older campers practice round-offs, round-off back handsprings and other higher-level tumbling. "We like to do this camp to really connect with our community," a camp leader said on the program, adding that staff also work on "mental skills, like how to build confidence and how to interact with your peers and work together as a team."
Camp leaders highlighted that the program is part of a development pipeline for May River’s competitive program. The broadcast said May River is the defending region champion and currently ranked fourth in the state; organizers pointed to former campers who have returned as junior leaders — "we now have two girls on the team that went here 4 years ago as elementary school students, and it is so great to see them moving up and leading in their own way," a speaker said.
Video of the camp and additional details are available on the Beaufort County Schools YouTube channel, the broadcast said.
What’s next: The program said camp videos are available online for families and prospective participants to view; no policy or school-board decisions were announced in connection with the segment.
