Board hires designer for Shrewsbury Elementary infrastructure work and explores trailer generator redundancy

The Southern York County School District board on June 11 approved a motion to have SiteLogic IQ design and price critical building‑function work for Shrewsbury Elementary, including HVAC, related finishes and electrical upgrades with not‑to‑exceed amounts read into the motion.

During the discussion, board members and facilities staff explored a contingency approach to electrical redundancy — a trailer‑based standby generator that could be moved between sites in the event a building generator failed. Board members and the facilities presenter discussed tradeoffs: a trailer generator could shorten downtime if a primary generator failed, permit longer useful life for in‑place generators by allowing scheduled maintenance, and provide an interim option while permanent replacements are designed and procured. Attendees noted practical considerations including hookup infrastructure, load capacity planning (middle‑school vs. elementary loads), testing/exercising schedules, maintenance for a trailer generator, and the cost of standby service agreements versus ownership.

The facilities representative said design phases will explore options and that additional work on security/access upgrades (deferred items) would be presented to the board in August. Board members credited a peer idea for the trailer generator to Mr. Hash and asked staff to investigate feasibility, hookup costs and potential service agreements with local providers so the board can weigh owning a trailer generator versus contracting standby service.

The motion to authorize SiteLogic IQ for design and pricing passed by voice vote. Staff will return with detailed design options and cost estimates for both permanent generator upgrades and trailer/standby approaches during the design and budgeting process.

Next steps: Administration and the design team will develop design options, cost estimates and a recommendation on generator redundancy and will present findings at a future board meeting (noted timeline: August for some security/access items).
