The Fernley Senior Citizen Advisory Committee voted to host its second senior fan giveaway on July 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the city's craft and hobby fair outside city hall.
"I make a motion that we have our second fan drive on July 3rd with the city's craft fair from 10 to 2," said Sharon Holly during the meeting; Jackie Lavoy seconded the motion and the committee approved it by voice vote.
The committee reviewed the fan-drive budget and inventory before voting. Members reported 61 fans on site, $2,000 in monetary donations and $1,398.38 in fan purchases, with 25 fans on back order and an estimated 81 fans available for an upcoming giveaway. April (staff) had previously suggested purchasing window fans (about $50 each) as an alternate option.
Committee members also coordinated volunteer and delivery logistics. Marty Hannah of the Rotary of Northwest Nevada told the committee her club could provide volunteer assistance and, if requested, delivery to homebound residents using an existing delivery list. "We would have those people who might be interested," she said, but added her club had not actively solicited fans because Fernley's effort was already organized by the city group.
Jordan Hicks volunteered to prepare an after-action summary template to track how many seniors were served and to record lessons learned for future giveaways; the committee agreed leftover inventory would be stored at city hall and distributed on subsequent dates if needed.
Members also raised a concern about a separate Facebook flyer advertising a June 29 fan-drive deadline that used the City of Fernley logo. Council liaison Albert Torres said private groups should not use the city logo without coordination. "If they want to help, that would be great, but they need to go through us," he said. Committee members asked staff to contact the private organizers (listed on the flyer as Plennium Builders and Agrew/P. Lang) to clarify whether they planned to coordinate donations with the city effort.
The committee asked city staff to prepare printed flyers for the June 13 giveaway noting the July 3 backup date, and to share the survey and outreach materials via senior centers, water-bill inserts and on-site QR codes to reach residents who lack reliable internet access.
Next steps: the committee will host the July 3 giveaway at the craft fair; staff will circulate flyers and follow up with external groups using city branding to confirm coordination.
