Barstow Unified board approves personnel items, step placement and new enrollment technician classification

At its meeting, the Barstow Unified School District board approved routine business and several personnel actions, including an advanced step placement for paraeducator Jessica Williams and a reclassification that creates an enrollment technician position.

The meeting’s presiding officer asked for and received a motion to adopt the agenda "as presented," which passed by voice vote. The chair then noted the district's PC budget had been approved by San Bernardino County. "It was approved," a board member said during the announcement.

Under the consent calendar the board ratified an eligibility list for a senior office assistant position after Mr. Ortiz presented the list to the board and asked for approval; members voted in favor with no opposition recorded.

Mr. Ortiz also presented a request for an advanced step placement (CCSEA range 25) for Jessica Williams, a paraeducator in English language programs. Ortiz said Williams holds an associate's degree in social and behavioral science and has prior experience as an instructional aide and program leader. While the request mentioned Step 3, Ortiz recommended action in line with the district's usual practice of advancing to Step 2. The board moved to "take the recommended action" and voted to approve the step advancement.

Later in the meeting Mr. Ortiz presented a memorandum of understanding and a new classification for an enrollment technician that both parties had already signed. The board moved to approve the MOU and reclassification; the motion was approved by voice vote.
