The Bridgton select board moved to accept the transfer of the former Bridgton Memorial School from MSAD 61 under the deed terms presented to the board.
Board members discussed deed restrictions that limit uses of the property and emphasized that the town should develop at least two costed alternatives for redevelopment. One member urged that any major change in use be put to voters because of the long-term consequences for the town.
Discussion noted that the property is classified as a school and that the deed contains numerous restrictions; members said some potential uses (including demolition and conversion to park space) may be constrained by the deed. The board recognized prior community work on the property and observers noted the town has a list of interested parties for future reuse.
The board approved the transfer motion after the discussion and moved on to other agenda items. Members directed staff to provide documentation and to develop options for the board and voters to consider.
