Veterans Service Office reports $442,658 in retro payments and steady caseload

The Sawyer County Veterans Service Office told the Administrative Committee that May remained busy, with roughly 455 phone calls, 915 letters/emails/faxes and 172 office visits. The office reported submitting 85 disability and compensation claims through the end of May and receiving retroactive payments totaling $442,658.46 for claims decided in veterans’ favor.

The office also described ongoing outreach and counseling work, including co‑managed individual and group counseling sessions and a recurring "coffee and conversation" outreach event that averages about a dozen participants. Staff attended Veterans Benefits training through the Minneapolis VA Healthcare System and said they are coordinating quarterly events with the VA regional office in Milwaukee to streamline communications and reduce duplication of paperwork.

Committee members asked about staff hours and staffing needs; the Veterans Service presenter said space and real‑estate constraints limit the ability to add a receptionist despite operational benefits. The office reported continued referrals and cooperation with other local service providers.
