Matthew Place, a patron from the Monaceel neighborhood, told the Park Hill Board of Education on June 11 that families in his neighborhood are receiving inconsistent information about school busing as the district applies its 2023 transportation eligibility criteria.
Place told the board that GIS review and on-site observation show an unpaved easement owned by the city between the public sidewalk and the school property. Under the district's 2023 transportation update, distance is measured to school property and the walking path must be a continuous hard-surface path; Place said the easement is not a hard surface and its ownership complicates whether families qualify for busing.
"Because this area is not school property and it's not a hard surface, it's unclear how this portion of the pathway is being interpreted for multiple families in our neighborhood," Place said, asking the board to ensure the published criteria are applied accurately and transparently. He said earlier family notices said busing would not be provided for 2026'7 but a later communication indicated it would be provided while the matter is reassessed.
Board members thanked Place; staff told the audience the district is reviewing the neighborhood with the 2023 criteria and that the family should continue working through the administrative process. No board action was taken at this meeting.
What's next: District staff said they will continue the reassessment under the district's published criteria and communicate outcomes through the administration.
