Supervisors set public hearings to consider selling several county parcels

Nottoway County supervisors reviewed offers and authorized advertising public hearings on several county-owned parcels at a June meeting.

Mr. Bowen outlined three sale items: two small Crystal Lake lots for which an offer near $14,000 was reported; the old annex/shop building with an offer near $20,000 and potential environmental concerns; and a set of properties described as the barracks property 'inside the gate,' where a prospect had previously expressed interest. For the annex/shop building, supervisors discussed obtaining an appraisal and investigating environmental remediation costs before final sale.

The board voted to advertise public hearings and to list advertised prices for the public hearing notices. Commissioners emphasized contract language must state that any sale is subject to a public hearing and final vote; the county attorney and staff agreed to review and ensure safeguarding language appears in any agreement.

What’s next: Staff will prepare notices, schedule the public hearings (noted to be roughly in July if timelines hold), and bring proposals back with appraisal and environmental-review information where needed.
