The Buckeye Union School District Board of Trustees on May 20 unanimously approved an elementary curriculum update that replaces Magnetic Reading with Magnetic Literacy, and heard presentations on proposed Mandarin language arts and a new middle school English language arts program.
Rachelle Ball, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction, presented the elementary update and said Magnetic Literacy offers enhanced literacy supports and instructional alignment. Board Member Scott Masten moved to adopt the update; Board Member Jon Yoffie seconded. Parent Brandon Diaz provided public comment before the vote. The motion carried 3–0.
Ball also presented two discussion items for board consideration: a proposed Mandarin Language Arts curriculum and a proposed middle school ELA curriculum. Board members questioned implementation timelines, instructional support needs and alignment with grade-level expectations. No vote or formal action was taken on the Mandarin or middle school ELA proposals.
Board members praised student engagement and teacher work tied to curriculum reviews and noted the district is monitoring state-level fiscal developments that may affect implementation timing. The district’s next regular meeting is scheduled for June 10, 2026.
The meeting minutes list the adoption motion, movers and seconders and a 3–0 vote; the minutes do not include contract or purchase price details for the curriculum materials.
