UN updates on Sudan, Uganda Ebola funding gap and refugee returns; UN agencies launch alliances and goodwill ambassadorships

At the United Nations briefing the spokesperson said aid deliveries continue in several parts of Sudan despite ongoing access restrictions, noting UNICEF and partners delivered health, nutrition and WASH supplies via an eight-truck convoy to Dilling and Kadugli expected to assist nearly 39,000 people.

The spokesperson said the UN team in Uganda and partners are supporting the national Ebola response: WFP transported 33 metric tons of relief supplies to Bunya, and UN and humanitarian partners appealed for $15.8 million to support the response through August, of which $3.1 million has been mobilized and a $12.7 million funding gap remains.

The briefing also highlighted that the high commissioner for human rights launched a Global Alliance for Human Rights anchored in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. UNHCR's Global Trends report was cited as showing a 3% decline in total global refugee numbers in 2025 to an estimated 41.6 million, while noting many returns may have occurred under pressure and long-term displacement remains a concern.

The spokesperson additionally noted agency announcements: WFP named a Danish chef as a new goodwill ambassador to spotlight WFP's work on hunger (the transcript gives a name whose spelling is unclear), and UNICEF appointed an 18-year-old footballer as a goodwill ambassador to champion every child's right to play.
