The Conneaut SD Board on June 10 approved item 14H-1, a personnel contract for administrative positions including the business manager, following a pointed discussion and a roll-call vote.
Opponents said they could not support what they called an unfair contract and expressed concern that it did not provide sufficient performance metrics. "I can't support a contract that I believe to be unfair and unjust driven by what I consider some personal animosity," one board member said, adding that a business manager should be paid more and that the proposed contract did not meet expectations for a competitive salary.
Supporters said they had reservations but that board leadership would provide mentoring and greater oversight. One proponent said he would support the contract because the board president had "personally assured me that he will be very actively involved in mentoring" to bring the position up to expectations.
A roll call taken at the meeting recorded votes as follows: Yes — Mr. Hall, Mr. Horn, Mr. McQuiston, Mr. Nater, Mr. Williamson (5); No — Mr. John Burn, Mr. Schae/Shape (2); Abstain — Mr. Robert Burn (1). By that count, the motion carried.
Why it matters: Approval of administrative contracts sets pay and performance expectations for senior district staff and can shape district leadership and spending priorities.
What’s next: The board will monitor metrics and oversight tied to administrative performance as discussed, and the related personnel contracts will take effect for the 2026–27 school year.
