Compton — The Compton Personnel Board unanimously approved a batch of hiring actions, temporary appointments and abolishments at its April 13 meeting, and granted short-term exemptions from the classified service for three positions.
The board received and filed a report of temporary and exempt appointments as of April 13, 2026, approved minutes from Jan. 18, 2024 and March 19, 2026, and voted to adopt several eligible lists covering positions across the water, public works, purchasing and fire departments. The motions carried on roll call with all four members present voting yes.
Why it matters: the approved lists and appointments clear the way for recruitment and internal promotions across key city services, and staff said the actions respond to retirements and promotions that have opened multiple vacancies.
Board business: Item A3 covered a set of eligible lists the board approved, including water production and distribution supervisor (promotional); environmental services coordinator (open competitive); water service worker 3 (promotional); purchasing manager (city manager’s office); project manager (various departments); maintenance lead worker (street maintenance); and firefighter (open competitive). Staff told the board there are approximately 13 current firefighter vacancies; after narrowing to candidates with paramedic certification, 13 applicants remained who completed the process.
The board also approved Item A4, three temporary 90-day appointments: a payroll specialist (city controller’s office) effective March 23, 2026; a recreation leader effective May 1, 2026; and an office assistant 3 in the city clerk’s office effective March 30, 2026. Under Item A5 the board abolished several older eligible lists — citing age, few remaining candidates or declined offers — and authorized fresh recruitments where needed.
On the record: staff explained some abolishments followed candidate withdrawals or promotions from the list, while other vacancies stemmed from retirements or interim promotions that created downstream openings. Board members asked for counts and process details; staff answered that most lists had one or two vacancies and that some job specifications require meet-and-confer sessions with unions before changes can be finalized.
Votes at a glance: the recorded roll-call votes for the agenda package and each motion were unanimous among the four voting members (Daniels Bernett, Black, Henry and Vice Chair Dixon).
Next steps: several recruitments will proceed and staff said they will continue coordinating with unions on job-spec revisions. The board scheduled its next meeting for May 21, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
