At the start of Wednesday’s meeting the Southgate City Council paused for a series of recognitions and certificates. Pageant director Lindsay introduced the Miss Southgate 2026 winners and thanked volunteers; Council presented certificates to the new court and to the 2025 outgoing court.
Councilwoman Maria announced the winning entries in the student park‑renaming contest and presented certificates to two Stanford Avenue Elementary students whose suggestion was selected to rename the park formerly known as Caesar Chavez Park to “Aelia City Park.” The students and school representatives were invited to brief the council on their research and motivation for the winning names.
The council also recognized International Studies Learning Center at the Legacy High School Complex as a 2026 California Distinguished School under the category of achievement‑gap closers; Principal Marcos Hernandez accepted the certificate and thanked teachers, students and parents. Finally the council presented a certificate to local athlete Diego Rosales for his role on the Chivas U21 team that won the Clausura 2026 championship.
These items were ceremonial and did not require council action beyond presentation and congratulations.
