Middlebury adopts winter-sand and right-of-way maintenance policy

The Select Board voted June 9 to adopt a formal town policy on winter sand use and right‑of‑way maintenance presented by highway staff. The policy standardizes when public works will remove sand or repair damage caused by plowing or deposition in the right‑of‑way and creates a process for residents to report problems.

Matt, speaking for the highway/contractor team, said the policy is intended as "a resource as a guide" to create consistency across the town and to set expectations with residents. He told the board the town will repair significant damage in the right‑of‑way and will work with residents when private property is affected.

Board members said the policy will help to avoid ad hoc treatment of individual properties and asked staff to bring the policy forward for formal adoption; the board approved the policy by voice vote.
