Trustees approve East Hampton Marina bulkhead replacement permit, contingent on town/county approvals

Trustees reviewed a permit application from Drew Bennett on behalf of East Hampton Marina (Suffolk County Tax Map 3000-120-1-11) for replacement of an existing wood bulkhead with a cantilevered vinyl sheathing bulkhead supported by tiebacks.

Staff described the work as removal of the existing navy-style bulkhead (pilings and whalers), excavation behind the bulkhead and limited in-water excavation seaward of the wall, and installation of driven vinyl sheeting with an upper whaler tied back to dead-men anchors on land. The contractor would dewater excavated material in contained storage and deploy a turbidity curtain around the work area.

Trustees and staff raised environmental safeguards: they noted there is an oyster reef just north of the construction and that permit conditions should direct contractors to avoid impacts to that reef and coordinate with South Fork Sea Farmers, which monitors nearby shellfish resources.

A trustee moved and another seconded approval of the permit "contingent upon the procurement of the DC and town permits." The chair called for any objections and the motion was approved; the transcript does not record a roll-call tally.

The trustees included the condition that the applicant secure any outstanding county and town permits and apply standard sediment-control measures (containment, turbidity curtain) and to take care around the oyster reef area.
