The South Colonie Central School District Board of Education on June 9 recognized local Eagle Scouts and highlighted three seniors who earned the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness.
Melissa Judge, the district’s K–12 humanities supervisor, introduced Kai, Aiden Kramer and Laura as examples of approximately 140 South Colonie students who received the Seal of Civic Readiness this year. "My name is Melissa Judge. For those of you who don't know me, I have the honor of being the K12 humanities supervisor for the district," Judge said, and explained that the seal recognizes civic knowledge and civic participation demonstrated in digital portfolios.
Students presented elements of their portfolios and capstone projects. Laura, identifying herself as a senior and class president, said the civic capstone and coursework helped prepare her for a medical career and community-facing roles. Aiden Kramer described substantial service learning and certifications: "I've been volunteering at the West Alb Fire Department for the past three years," he said, and he noted completing EMT coursework and ride-alongs as part of his preparation.
The board also recognized several students for achieving Eagle Scout rank. Troop leaders introduced scouts and their projects, which included patio renovations, building birdhouses, and constructing picnic tables and park improvements; trustees praised the students and families for long-term dedication to service.
Why it matters: The Seal of Civic Readiness and recognitions showcase district investment in experiential learning, internships and community service that students said contributed to postsecondary readiness and civic engagement.
The board thanked students and coaches for their presentations and invited photos; the recognitions were presented during the awards portion of the meeting.
