Coaches and athletic staff at the South Colonie board meeting on June 9 celebrated a successful sectional track season and previewed athletes headed to state competition.
Athletic director Mr. Romer said the district hosted sectionals May 27 and produced numerous individual and relay champions. "Curtis Watson won shot and will be going to the state meet," Romer said, and he named Ryan Busky for setting a sectional record in the long jump and competing in high jump and long jump at the state qualifier.
Coach Palmer described the girls' relay performances: "We now hold four of the six section 2 relay records," she said, and noted that the 4x1 and 4x4 squads ran sectional-record times and will compete at states. Several sprinters and hurdlers—named during the meeting—qualified for state competitions and set school and section marks, including Mariah Dur setting a school record in the 100 meters.
The board congratulated coaches and student-athletes and wished them luck at upcoming state meets. Coaches encouraged community support and noted that some athletes were absent from the meeting due to exams and state qualifying events.
Why it matters: The district's track accomplishments highlight extracurricular program success and student opportunities to compete at the state level; coaches said these results reflect both athlete talent and coaching staff preparation.
The athletic recognitions were presented during the awards portion of the meeting prior to routine business.
