The commission added a walk-on resolution (143-26) to the consent calendar to authorize $5,000 grants for participants who successfully complete the Mayor’s Jumpstart Academy.
City staff told commissioners the program’s payments had previously been administered through a community foundation but that a change in IRS rules prevented the foundation from continuing to facilitate the grants on the city's behalf. "Due to a change in the IRS rules, the community foundation is no longer going to facilitate uh the funding of the grants on the city's behalf. They have wired the $55,000 remaining from the donations to the city account," staff said. Staff said they will bring forward an F-resolution at the June 22 meeting to accept the $55,000 and that the $55,000 is a budgeted item.
Commissioner Fox asked whether the grants are a new ongoing expense or an existing program; staff replied the grants are part of the Jumpstart Academy and that graduates receive the $5,000 award when they complete the program. The consent calendar, including the walk-on Jumpstart item, was approved unanimously.
