Commissioners call for workshop on e-bike and e-scooter sidewalk safety

Commissioners raised the safety of electric bikes and scooters on sidewalks and asked staff to schedule a workshop to examine policy options.

Commissioner Sylvester said he had reviewed other area municipalities that have banned EVs on sidewalks and urged discussion because, he said, injuries to pedestrians from these devices are "rising exponentially." He proposed a mayor-and-commission workshop on the issue.

Commissioner Fox said the issue is already on staff’s radar and noted elements of the bike master plan will address regulated routes; Commissioner Ward urged a balanced approach that emphasizes building safe routes and education rather than immediate bans, citing concerns about people who rely on EVs for work and mobility. No motion or vote occurred; commissioners agreed to pursue further discussion in a workshop.
