The Canal Winchester Local Board of Education on Monday approved GMP amendment number one for the district’s long‑planned performing arts center and athletic facilities, clearing the way for the construction phase to proceed.
District presenters displayed renderings of the new performing arts center (PAC), a multi-field baseball/softball complex and an indoor turf fieldhouse, and described features such as warm wood‑tone materials in the PAC, TV monitors, removable wheelchair seating, LED color‑changing lighting and a shared press box for the ballfields. Staff said the baseball and softball complex is expected to be ready by January 2027 and that the PAC and athletic fieldhouse are targeted for completion by the end of November 2027.
Why it matters: the amendment sets a guaranteed maximum price for a multi‑million dollar construction program that will alter parking, access and campus traffic during the build and create new performance and competition facilities for students and the community.
District staff urged residents to expect active construction through the summer and monthly photo updates on the district website. Staff said temporary gravel or asphalt lots will be provided while some on‑site parking is under construction, and that access to the Barber Museum and the historical center should remain available though Deets Drive access may change.
A board member described the GMP as the project’s guaranteed maximum price and said the district’s hope is to “come in lower.” The public transcript includes a truncated GMP figure that could not be unambiguously read in the record; the district should be consulted for the official, published GMP amount and contract documents.
Board discussion also covered ADA features and stadium access: district staff said removable seating and companion wheelchair spaces are planned for the PAC and that new ramps and companion seating arrangements will be provided for spectator access at the stadium. The board was told that the bleacher work has a target completion date around July 1 to be ready for the upcoming season.
The Board approved the GMP amendment in a roll‑call vote recorded by the clerk as Mrs. Tally yes, Mrs. Cobb yes, Mr. Art yes and Miss Green yes.
What’s next: construction activities will ramp up on campus this summer; the district will post monthly project photos and updates on its website and the board will receive periodic project reports as construction progresses.
