York County roads staff reported on safety improvements planned for a hazardous intersection and on short-term pavement repairs.
Ashley Rasmmanson of the county roads department told commissioners that after an almost-collision at the intersection of Delaware and East 25th the county ordered solar-powered flashing red lights to be mounted on stop signs, added “cross traffic does not stop” signs, and plans to install rumble bars and pavement markings once road surfacing work is complete. Rasmmanson said the selected lights are solar and that staff chose a less expensive model recommended by a consultant; if vandalism or durability problems arise, the county will upgrade to a sturdier unit.
Rasmmanson also described recent pothole repairs using a base material taken from beneath a Lincoln airport runway (about 35% 1-inch crusher run, 35% gravel, 25% sand, 5% dirt) and denied public concerns that the mix contained crushed concrete. She said crews have been flagging ruts and handling the worst spots as weather allows and encouraged residents to call in issues so the department can prioritize work.
The roads representative said the county will consult crash-data tools to identify other intersections that may need safety upgrades. No formal vote was required; the report was received for the record.
