The Pittsylvania County School Board heard an end‑of‑year report from Superintendent Dr. Mayhew on June 9, 2026, including student testing results, program recognitions and upcoming summer events.
Dr. Mayhew said AP testing and other end‑of‑year assessments "went well," and highlighted several district recognitions: a graduate merit award winner and a Pinnacle award recipient. He reported that Chattam High School's music program — including band and chorus — received a VMEA Blue Ribbon Award, described in the meeting as the highest accolade from the Virginia Music Educators Association for the Commonwealth.
The superintendent also noted district efforts to honor retirees and educators, citing an employee recognition event that included written comments read aloud. He reported that Exxon Mobil awarded $20,000 in education grants to support science, math and playground materials for district schools.
During the meeting staff presented a Certificate of Excellence honoring student Victoria Spang for 13 years of perfect attendance; Miss Petty read the certificate before the board congratulated the student.
Dr. Mayhew closed with reminders of upcoming dates: a disciplinary and reenrollment meeting on June 15, the district's 250th celebration on July 4, the VSBA conference in mid‑July, summer school graduation on July 22 and new employee orientation on July 29–30. He said additional materials and VSBA policy updates will be provided to the board in coming weeks.
The board did not take further action on the recognitions and informational items; the meeting moved on to new business and formal votes.
