American Legion commander thanks Nixa, notes membership gains and damage to post lawn

An American Legion commander addressed the Nixa City Council on June 9 to thank city staff and volunteers for support of veterans’ events and to report recent membership gains.

The commander said the post has completed about 40 veteran ceremonies so far this year and "for the first time since 2014 we have exceeded 100% recruitment" for the organization. He credited city employees and volunteers — naming several staff and residents — for help staging events and outreach that yielded new members.

The commander also described damage to the Legion post’s front lawn caused during fiber installation by outside contractors. He said the installer cut an internet cable and left debris and rocks on the site, and that after initial contractor promises to repair the lawn went unfulfilled, a Nixa staff member, Nate Miller, and Nixa vehicles stepped in to reseed and stabilize the area.

"So I really, Nate, I really do appreciate that. He actually went the extra mile and stepped up and did something right when no one else would," the commander said as he acknowledged those who assisted.

He presented a certificate from the American Legion to Mayor Giddens in appreciation of city support and closed his remarks by urging continued collaboration between the post and the city.

The council thanked the Legion for its service. The visitor section was closed with no other speakers signed up.
