Developers say grid upgrades for large data centers are typically paid by the project; operation jobs are limited but create contractor demand

At a Baltimore County planning briefing, Drew Johnson and Pete Carbono of Oppedin/OPEDN explained how large data-center projects interact with the electric grid and local labor markets.

Johnson said that substantial transmission and distribution work—ordering new transformers, upgrading breakers or expanding substations—can be required for large data-center loads and that those costs are typically borne by the project rather than by existing ratepayers. He added that some utilities are establishing special large-load tariffs to allocate costs differently for data centers.

On jobs, presenters acknowledged that operational headcount inside a data center is small compared with manufacturing, but they argued data centers produce a multiplier effect across diesel mechanics, HVAC technicians, electricians, fiber-optic contractors and other service providers. "They're higher than bulk warehouse," Carbono said, describing the mix of ongoing technical roles and episodic contractor work for refreshes or densifications.

Presenters offered to make slides available to the county planning team and to participate in follow-up sessions to address site-specific interconnection studies, tariff questions and workforce considerations.
