East Hampton wins $7M for Cantwell Court project; supervisor outlines Route 114 apartment plans

New York State’s Housing and Community Renewal has approved more than $7 million in funding for a 16-unit affordable housing project at Cantwell Court in East Hampton, Town Supervisor Kathy Burke Gonzales told LTV in an interview.

The supervisor said Cantwell Court will serve households across a range of incomes under an AMI-average approach, targeting roughly 70% to 130% of area median income, and that the town intends the homes to be all-electric and use native landscaping. "We want the homes to be all electric... solar ready," the supervisor said in the sit-down interview.

Gonzales described local policies intended to prioritize residents and workers: she said intake data show about 93% of households who move into town-subsidized housing either live or work locally. The broadcast noted that Cantwell Court occupies the front seven acres of a former 12-acre parcel near Town Hall and that the housing units are expected to be sited this summer.

On a separate parcel along Route 114, the town purchased two parcels and placed an affordable housing overlay district on the site; Gonzales said the town transferred the parcels to the local housing authority, which is now working on conceptual design and layout for an apartment project. She stressed that projects must pass multiple reviews — including the town planning board, the Architectural Review Board and Suffolk County health reviews for septic systems — before construction can move forward.
