The Milton School Board’s governance committee presented a first reading of 11 board policies, many implementing provisions of Wisconsin Act 89 that address professional boundaries and staff–student communications.
Ed, who summarized the review, said the policies include required annual training and clarity on digital and in-person communications to strengthen student safety. Committee members flagged one policy specifically directed to board conduct and urged trustees to review the materials online in BoardDocs ahead of the next meeting.
A second governance speaker reminded trustees that state law requires districts to adopt Act 89–related policies by Sept. 1 and noted the personal communication devices policy (5136) must be approved by July 1 to comply with recent legislative changes. The board was asked to return with questions or edits before a final vote at the next regular meeting.
The first reading produced no final action; staff and committee members requested trustee review and expected votes in June to meet the statutory timelines.
