Brown County commissioners on June 8 reviewed and certified returns from the May 26 primary runoff, the county’s election administrator, Brenda, told the court.
Brenda reported a total turnout of 4,510 voters out of 25,591 registered voters in Brown County for the runoff. She said 388 absentee mailings were distributed, 286 absentee ballots were counted, early voting totaled 2,447 ballots, and the final certified total was 4,510. She reported provisional and limited-ballot counts as described during the canvass presentation.
The canvass listed winners in multiple races as reported by the election administrator: Vicky Goodwin in the Democratic lieutenant governor contest (886 votes), Nathan Johnson as the Democratic attorney general nominee (66), Kim Paxton in the U.S. Senate Republican tally (2,865), Maize Middleton in the Republican attorney general tally (2,185), Jim Wright for Railroad Commission (reported as 2,100), Thomas Smith for the Board of Criminal Appeals (2,188), Tom Bunson for county judge (2,373), and Brandon Buyers for county commissioner, Precinct 4 (587). The clerk noted that detailed precinct returns were on file.
A commissioner moved to approve the canvass; by voice/hand vote the court approved certification. The clerk recorded the motion and, during the roll call context, the transcript records the response as 'Eight' when the court concluded the action.
Why it matters: Certification is the formal step that finalizes local election results and allows winners to be issued credentials and assume duties where applicable.
Next steps: The court approved the canvass and closed the item; precinct returns and the certified canvass record will be filed with the county clerk as required.
