The Huntington Union Free School District board on June 8 voted to adopt two new science curricula following a four‑ to five‑month pilot of vendors. The district will implement TCI’s Bring Science Alive in grades 4–6 and SAVIS’s Experience Science in grades 7–8 beginning in the 2026–27 school year.
Miss Ragazine, the district’s grades 7–12 science coordinator, told the board the review began with vendor demonstrations by TCI, SAVIS and a third provider. "We piloted each curriculum for five weeks across the four through eighth grade bands," she said, summarizing teacher feedback forms that evaluated engagement, ease of implementation, accessibility and standards alignment.
Teachers reported a clear grade‑band preference: the district found "high student engagement," ready‑to‑use instructional supports and easy differentiation in TCI for grades 4–6, including consumable investigation notebooks and Spanish‑language interface options; seventh‑ and eighth‑grade teachers favored SAVIS for its Google‑native resources and editability, which fit Finley Middle School practices.
The board also discussed implementation. A trustee asked about bridging sixth to seventh grade; Ragazine said the district has scheduled professional development that will bring sixth, seventh and eighth grade teachers together so "the sixth graders can bring the TCI with them and the seventh and eighth graders will bring the SAVIS" and staff will ensure standards alignment.
District staff told the board that grades 4–6 will receive science kits with replenishments as needed and consumable science journals; grades 7–8 will receive initial kits with future replenishment managed through the Finley Middle School science budget. Both platforms provide Spanish language instructional materials and printable resources for teachers who prefer paper copies.
The motion to adopt each program was moved and carried unanimously, with the board recording voice/roll‑call cues for approval.
