Jackson County Auditor Lisa Smith presented the official canvas of the June 2 primary on June 9, telling the Board of Supervisors that the election ran smoothly and that new scanning equipment reduced manual handling errors.
Smith described the county’s precinct procedures (morning zero reports, sealed thumb drives and direct uploads from precinct machines) and said the county recorded 237 write-in votes. Of 13,660 eligible registered voters, 2,350 voted on election day; Smith reported 433 absentee ballots were received and 427 were counted (two arrived late and were not counted, and two overseas ballots were not returned).
Smith praised the county’s recently purchased scanner and the tenn system, saying the equipment worked well through initial use in city and school races and during the primary. She asked the board to authorize signatures on the official State of Iowa abstract and to forward all paperwork to the Iowa Secretary of State and the political parties; the board approved the request by motion and the chair and auditor will sign the abstract.
Smith also described routine procedures used to secure results (dual printouts, sealed envelopes and chain-of-custody steps) and said the county had no machine issues during the primary.
What happens next: The auditor will sign and submit the official abstract and vote totals to the Iowa Secretary of State and to party officials as required by law.
