Commissioners discussed a legacy 1981 resolution restricting commercial truck traffic on some county roads and agreed to review and update it to reflect modern enforcement practices.
Austin (county council) noted the resolution’s penalty language included jail time and suggested replacing punitive language with fines or nonmoving violations that would penalize the vehicle/company without risking a driver’s commercial license. Commissioners discussed the need to replace faded signage, identify practical haul routes in coordination with local grain elevators and road-and-bridge staff, and notify local businesses and carriers before enforcement resumes.
Several commissioners emphasized a collaborative approach, proposing to work with elevators and major local shippers to pick reasonable ingress/egress routes and then target resources to maintain those roads. Austin said he would draft proposed edits to the resolution and circulate them to the commission for review.
Why it matters: Updating the resolution could reduce wear on minor county roads, focus maintenance funds on designated haul routes, and create a clearer enforcement framework that balances road preservation and commercial traffic needs.
