The York County School Board recognized local student achievements at its June 8 meeting, highlighting a Tab High School engineering team that won the World Kidwin Challenge and several New Horizons Regional Education Center students who placed first in state-level SkillsUSA competitions.
Board and division leaders asked the Tab High 'Windbreakers' team to stand after explaining the students designed and tested wind turbines during the international STEM competition. Team members named in the meeting included Megan Wei, Eddie Zu, Neil Darnney, Hung Su, Brett Zhao, Sandy Valisander and Heat Patel.
The board also recognized SkillsUSA champions who attend New Horizons. The meeting listed William Mueller (Brutin High School) for welding fabrication; Terrence Newsome (Tab High) and Jaden Thomas (York River Academy) as members of unmanned commercial drones teams; and Grayson Kelly (York High) for first place in marine service technology. Attendees applauded and the division took a short break to allow individual congratulations and photos.
The recognitions were presented as examples of strong career and technical education opportunities in the division. No board action was required.
