The Camas School District board reviewed a proposed policy on pregnant and parenting students during its June 8 workshop and asked staff for additional analysis of procedures, staffing implications and whether existing Title IX and state law already provide equivalent protections.
Trustees raised two main concerns: first, whether a separate policy duplicates protections already provided under Title IX or state law, and second, whether the procedures tied to a new policy would create an unfunded or administratively burdensome obligation for principals and staff. One board member asked whether the protections in the draft policy were already encompassed by Title IX; another urged caution about adopting procedural requirements without administration feedback about capacity and cost.
District staff said they would consult principals and return with more detailed implementation analysis before the board considers the policy again. The board agreed to revisit the item at a later date after staff report back on potential burdens and practical implementation steps.
The discussion made clear the board’s interest in protecting vulnerable students while also seeking clarity on whether a separate policy would create unintended operational obligations.
