Sunbury City to begin phase one of police parking-lot fence using fines and a donation

Sunbury City council discussed starting phase one of a fencing project for the police parking lot, with plans to use fines and a private donation to pay for initial work.

Chief Slack told the council that about $9,000 in fines had accumulated and that a local donor, identified as Vinnie Cy, provided $5,000, bringing roughly $14,000 available for phase one. "Under the initial plan, it would give us the side fencing and the wiring and pre-wiring for the... gate that will go in the back," the chief said, describing that gates for the front and back would be part of phase two because gates are expensive.

Why it matters: the fence aims to secure the police parking lot, deter trespassing and reduce damage to police vehicles. Council members discussed whether those funds were still available from prior budget years and whether the full project cost (discussed at about $28,000) could be found to finish the gates in the next budget cycle.

Next steps: staff will confirm the current account balances and, if phase-one funds remain available, proceed with the side fencing and conduit/pre-wiring for future gates. Council did not adopt a formal vote during the work session but signaled support to proceed with phase one if funding checks out.
