The DeSoto Parish School Board honored student athletes from district high schools and reviewed attendance data for the school year during its June 4 meeting.
The board recognized Lyric Spencer (North Dakota High School) for state championships in long jump, triple jump and the 200-meter dash; Ashton Simon (Mansville High School) for a state title in the high jump; and Jade Jones (Stanley High School) for a girls powerlifting state championship. Board members and administrators thanked coaches and families for supporting the students.
Mr. Bush reviewed the district’s attendance initiatives and the "Finish Strong" challenge. He reported the district finished the year at 94.6% attendance and noted the state average of 93.4%, which the district exceeded. For May winners, Lower Sport High School posted 95.58% attendance and Mansfield Middle posted 95.16%. The six-week "Finish Strong" winner had a 96.59% rate; that prize is sponsored by Big River Restaurants (Applebee's in Alexander) and includes a $200 check.
Administrators noted ongoing efforts to reduce late arrivals and absenteeism during the last weeks of the school year and said they will continue summer planning to strengthen attendance next year.
The recognitions and attendance report required no formal board action beyond acknowledgment.
