Laredo Independent School District launched its Seamless Summer Option meals program at a kickoff event at DDHR Elementary, announcing that meal service will run from June 1 through July 17 at roughly 40 school and community sites.
A presenter for Laredo ISD's Child Nutrition program said the district is expanding access beyond campuses to locations such as parks, recreation centers and city pools so families can get meals when school is out. "Hunger takes no vacation," the presenter said, describing Child Nutrition as the district's response to summer food insecurity.
The presenter listed menu items planned for the program, saying students can expect familiar options including chicken nuggets, pizza, other chicken items and breakfast offerings, and added that meals will include fruits, vegetables and milk. "Sky's the limit cuz in Laredo ISD, the place to be when it comes to good nutrition," the presenter said.
District leaders framed the program as part of a broader emphasis on the "three E"—education, exercise and eating right—to support child well-being over the summer months. The presenter said the program will operate at "about 40 sites," a mix of school locations and non-school community sites.
The DDHR Elementary kickoff included a short performance by students, noted as winners of a school breakfast singing contest, to mark the start of the summer offerings.
Families seeking meals or site locations are encouraged to check Laredo ISD communications for the full list of participating sites and hours; the presenter said service would begin June 1 and run through July 17.
