The Ashland County Forestry Committee voted to split the county’s $10,000 recreation grant fund among three local applicants after reviewing project proposals and available matching funds.
Staff described the grant rules: applicants must demonstrate 25% cash in hand and the county awards up to 25% of an applicant’s unfunded balance. Three eligible applications were considered: the Glidden Athletic Association, the Bay City Cultural Center (identified in documents as the Bohemian Hall) and the Butternut Area Park Association, which proposed ADA‑compliant restroom improvements.
Committee discussion focused on whether to split the pool evenly or allocate funds proportionally to need. George Buset said a proportional allocation would more clearly demonstrate the inadequacy of current county funding levels; other members argued equity between a larger project and smaller applicants. After debate the committee adopted a motion allocating $2,000 to Glidden, $3,000 to Bay City Cultural Center and $5,000 to Butternut Area Park Association. The motion carried on a roll-call vote (three yes votes; one abstention).
Erica, the grant writer who said she has worked with Glidden and Bay City, offered to connect Butternut with additional grant opportunities to support the ADA restroom project. Committee members noted many ADA grant programs still require local match and urged applicants to pursue multiple sources.
The committee asked staff to document awards and notify applicants; awarded funds will be subject to the usual grant agreement and documentation requirements.
