The Albemarle County Architecture Review Board on June 8 approved a revised comprehensive sign plan for 2405 Ivy Road with staff-recommended revisions and an allowance for an additional mounting type on a side elevation.
Staff said the core issue was that the submitted plan allowed multiple wall-mounted sign types while the guidelines encourage a single coordinated sign type for multi-tenant buildings in entrance corridors. Staff recommended excluding illuminated channel letters from permitted wall-mounted types because channel letters' greater depth and potential raceways make them visually different from flat cut or painted letters, but supported a projecting sign on the tower edge because that architectural feature stands apart. Staff also asked for adjustments to the sign area on a side elevation, notes clarifying light-fixture finish and projecting-sign background color, and clarification whether the projecting sign is a panel or a box.
Ed Brown of Frontr Runner Signs said the applicant will remove channel letters from the comprehensive sign plan and provide the clarifications requested by staff; he also noted an awning-letter proposal for Grit Coffee that will require a minor amendment to the plan for the canopy area. Board members asked whether the awning letters would be internally lit (applicant said he did not believe they would be) and confirmed that sign square footage will be verified when permits are submitted.
Board members agreed with staff’s recommendation and approved the comprehensive sign plan with the listed revisions, plus allowing the additional mounting type on the side elevation; the motion to approve carried unanimously.
What happens next: The applicant will submit permit applications with exact square footage and mounting details; staff will confirm illumination and finalize notes during the permit review process.
