Staff member opened a public lottery at Colony Central High School to assign seats and populate a waitlist for the Driver and Traffic Safety Education summer 2026 session.
"We will draw numbers at random to determine the order of acceptance into the program," the staff member said, then explained that once all available seats are filled remaining registrants would be placed on a waitlist in the order their number was drawn and notified by email.
The staff member reviewed eligibility rules: students must be at least 16 years old by the start of the session and must hold a valid New York State learner permit before beginning in-car instruction; proof of the permit will be required. The classroom instruction and in-car driving session is scheduled to run July 6 through July 27, 2026.
During a brief clarification, a participant asked whether the organizers could draw all 25 numbers so the waitlist would be populated. Staff agreed to pull 25 numbers and to present results in rows of five, with the final (fifth) row designated as the waitlist.
Staff then conducted the random draw and read the sequence of drawn numbers aloud. The sequence read by staff included: 5, 2, 25, 20, 19, 16, 18, 13, 21, 15, 8, 4, 17, 9, 22, and 7. The staff member congratulated students whose numbers were drawn for acceptance and reminded those placed on the waitlist that spots may open if selected students do not meet eligibility or are unable to participate.
Accepted students and those on the waitlist will be notified by email with their placement status and any next steps. The staff member closed by thanking registrants for their interest and wishing participants a safe and successful session.
