Michelle Bryant, representing community organizers, described an Open Streets proposal for side streets near Zimmerman playground while the park is under reconstruction. The program will run through September and is designed to offer weekend activities, vendors and safe outdoor space for families while the playground is closed.
Diana Finch said the application process required mandatory webinars, interviews, a detailed operational plan and documented business support, and that the project had received a letter of support from Council Member Kevin Riley’s office. Finch said the organizers coordinated with the 49th Precinct and agreed not to operate on July 4; they also obtained a grant whose award amount was determined in part by a neediest-tier location designation.
Board members asked clarifying questions about timeline and safety; the project leaders said they secured public-safety sign-off from the 49th Precinct and submitted a detailed budget. The leadership committee previously voted to send a letter supporting the Bronx Park East Farmers Market USDA promotion grant, and CB11 leadership confirmed the Open Streets application will move forward with board follow-up and support as needed.
Next steps: Organizers were asked to share the written operating plan and grant documentation with board staff and to coordinate with committee chairs on any permits or additional approvals.
