The Lancaster County Fire Commission heard on June 4 that the apparatus and equipment committee has asked Pierce for updated specifications on the county’s coordinated truck purchase and will circulate final option sheets to commissioners and departments once available.
The apparatus committee representative told commissioners the vendor has moved to a Gen 2 tanker with a longer body and updated lighting standards, and that committees are working to preserve handling and turn-radius characteristics local departments need. “Once we have a final spec, we will send it out,” the apparatus committee representative said.
Commissioners pressed for time to review the final specs and for access to sample vehicles. One commissioner warned that changing individual truck features could erode bulk purchasing savings: “As you start messing with the specs themselves… that messes with volume discount. So you’ll take the baseline cost of the tanker,” the apparatus committee representative explained, describing how option-related overages are absorbed when one buyer alters a shared order.
The committee said Pierce vehicles are being acquired through a state contract and HGAC cooperative purchasing arrangements, which set baseline pricing and remove the need for a competitive bid in this purchase. Committee members and commissioners discussed paint schemes, poly-tank versus Gen 2 body layouts and the difference between dry-side and wet-side tankers as part of technical trade-offs.
Commissioners also raised broader capital questions: one member noted the county is considering roughly $6 million for trucks and about $8 million for station buildings and requested clearer communication when county building plans affect fire operations. The apparatus committee said decisions about station siting and building projects are administrative county matters but agreed the commission should be notified and given materials for review.
Next steps: the apparatus committee will circulate the final option/spec sheet by email to the loop of commission contacts, and commissioners requested that at least one future meeting include hands-on review of sample vehicles at a hanger or staging area.
