Sierra Vista Police promote Citizens Police Academy, youth summer academy and Special Olympics cornhole fundraiser

Corporal Siege, the Sierra Vista Police Department’s public information officer, used Friday’s KWCD First Watch program to promote several community programs and outreach opportunities run by the department.

She said a cornhole tournament to benefit Special Olympics Arizona will take place at the Sierra Vista Golf Course starting at 2 p.m.; entry is $40 per two‑person team and proceeds will support Special Olympics athletes. "If you're any good at cornhole, you're going to have fun with the Special Olympics athletes," Corporal Siege said.

Corporal Siege also reminded listeners that applications for the Citizens Police Academy are due today; the academy will run about nine weeks on Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. and requires background checks. She described the program as an opportunity for citizens to learn about department operations and training.

On youth outreach, Siege said the department is partnering with the Cochise County Sheriff's Office on a summer youth academy for 15– to 18‑year‑olds scheduled June 22–25 at the ALA campus. The weeklong program will include demonstrations on search and rescue and detention operations and is intended for teens considering law enforcement careers.
