The Groton Beautification Committee said it submitted a nomination for a regional chamber award and is preparing awards for several sites, including a prominent plaza mural and Mystic Marina.
A member said she completed the chamber nomination form and handed copies to colleagues. Members discussed sending an award to the owner of the newly renovated plaza mural, identifying the owner as Wright Sigman of Washington, D.C., and said they would try to find his contact information to include with the award paperwork.
Separately, the committee reviewed its role in a public-art RFP process and said many of the entries were AI-generated; members reported 12 image submissions with only one judged to be original artwork. They also discussed the Route 117 entry sign submission: a committee member said her handwritten design did not meet the state’s electronic submittal requirements and that the design also included only two plants when state guidelines require three, so the design must be resubmitted in the prescribed format.
Volunteer recruitment was a recurring concern. The committee planned a volunteer weeding session on Sunday, July 7 at 9 a.m. but reported that of 14 signups most had canceled and only two volunteers were confirmed; organizers asked members to recruit at least one person each and to bring refreshments. The group also discussed long-term volunteer roles (captains responsible for sections) and whether neighborhood residents could be asked to water or maintain smaller features.
The committee decided to investigate two small traffic-circle plantings across from the senior center that had deteriorated when community caretakers did not maintain them; members noted the circles were originally installed by the committee but transferred informally to neighbors and have not been cared for.
Next steps: follow up on the chamber nomination response, try to find contact details for the plaza owner to present an award, resubmit the Route 117 sign application in the state's preferred format with three plants, and further recruit volunteers for the July weeding event.
