Chair says two island veterans enrolled after mistaken delivery of assistance letter

The San Juan County Veterans Advisory Board discussed a new application and a mistaken delivery that led to two island veterans receiving assistance.

The board’s chair (S1) described reviewing a new application from a San Juan Island resident (initials AB) and preparing a qualification letter for $700 a month in food assistance. "I printed up the letter, you're qualified for $700 a month food assistance," S1 said. The chair then realized he had handed the letter to a different veteran by mistake; that veteran subsequently completed an application and will receive help as well.

S1 said the outcome did not violate policy and that both men qualify under existing guidelines. To protect applicants’ privacy in recorded meetings, the chair proposed referring to applicants by island and initial rather than by full name when the meeting is posted online. "These meetings are now being recorded and will be put on the county website…so people can go back and watch old meetings," S1 said, adding that applicants are public record but the board would use initials to avoid discouraging veterans from seeking help.

S1 described one veteran as a retiree who used to work for the post office and who is awaiting surgery; the chair said both veterans will be enrolled and helped by the board’s program.
