Several speakers used public comment at the March 18 Regents meeting to press for an investigation into UC Davis athletic finances and to request a pause in actions that would downgrade or discontinue the women's equestrian team.
"I implore you to pause the dismantling of this team and analyze what has transpired," Professor Secret Elshot said, asking the board to review allegations of inflated equipment, administrative, and other line items.
Public commenters repeatedly cited a total discrepancy of about $1.1 million in the team's budget. David Tilman itemized alleged overstatements: equipment $722,000; fundraising $30,000; administrative $168,000; and 'other' $373,000. Greg Close, an HR professional who has worked in UC-affiliated settings, called for pressure on UC Davis leadership and greater transparency.
Regents did not take action during public comment. The allegations were raised again during the meeting and several regents acknowledged they had heard the concerns; no administrative response or formal investigation timeline was announced in the public record at the meeting.
The board may request follow-up materials from UC Davis administration and staff in subsequent meetings, but no formal motion or vote on the matter was recorded at the March 18 session.
