The Coffee County Capital Outlay Committee voted in June 2026 to adopt an ordinance restricting political campaign signs on the Coffee County Administrative and Public (CCAP) Building grounds.
Chair said the ordinance carves out a designated grass area on the CCAP property for campaign signage, limits individual signs to 16 square feet and permits signs only during the 30 days preceding the applicable election, with a seven-day requirement to remove them after Election Day. "Only candidates whose names are on the ballot of the next actual election day are allowed to have a sign posted at the CCAP facility," the Chair read when presenting the policy.
Committee members debated enforcement and timing. One member asked whether the county could legally impose the restriction at a public voting location; the Chair responded that the county can impose the restriction on county property. Another member said seven days after the election provides reasonable time for retrieval but questioned whether signs left out longer had been causing extra maintenance costs.
A motion to adopt the ordinance was made and seconded on the record; the committee voted to approve the measure. The meeting record shows the motion carried and that there was one recorded "no" vote. The chair said the committee will forward the ordinance to the full commission for review if members wish.
The ordinance applies only to the CCAP facility; the chair said it would be added to the candidate packet from the voter registration office so people know the restricted timeframe and the designated area on the property.
