Board adopts SHS French unit and curriculum committee recommends 17 course revisions

The Southington Board of Education on June 2026 approved a revision to SHS World Language French Year 5 Unit 6 and heard that the Curriculum & Instruction committee reviewed and passed 17 course proposals.

Curriculum committee chair Mr. Brown told the board the committee considered a broad package of new and revised coursework spanning SHS world languages (years 3–5), English grade units for grades 9–11, several agricultural science courses, illustrative math grade 7 accelerated, SHS accounting, business law, computer essentials and SHS marketing. ‘‘We had 17 courses that we considered,’’ Mr. Brown said, noting the committee passed them unanimously and that full materials are available online.

On the floor, Mr. Brown moved to approve the SHS World Language French Year 5 Unit 6 revision; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Chair read a list of first reads covering multiple curricula — including additional world language revisions, Common Lit for grades 6–8, and several SHS electives — and said the board will take action on those items at a future meeting.

Next steps: The approved French unit will be implemented in the SHS world language sequence; the administration and curriculum committee will bring the remaining first‑read items back for board action at the next meeting.
