Community Arts Coordinator Viet Kado updated the Carlsbad Arts Commission June 4 on arts-education activities and the department’s summer calendar, highlighting classroom field trips, community outreach and planned camps and events.
Kado said Explore More — the gallery-adjacent school program that brings students to exhibits and activities — drew more than 800 attendees during the spring and participated in a library-card sign-up partnership that resulted in over 200 new signups. The coordinator outlined multi-generational events and five cultural festivals to date this year that combined for about 1,200 attendees; the two Lunar New Year events alone drew about 300 people.
Looking ahead to summer, Kado described a busy schedule: nine TGIF concerts (each with dance lessons and pop-up art booths), a K-pop academy June 15–19 for 10–14 year olds, Art in the Village on June 28 with refreshed beach-chair installations, Club Pelican day camps July 13–31, and two fall cultural festivals Sept. 3 and Nov. 14. Kado noted continued partnerships with local schools and senior programs and said staff are planning exhibit activations and artist talks through the summer.
Commissioners had no public speakers on the item and offered positive feedback; several praised the expanded youth and community programming. The commission received the update with no formal action taken.
