Kansas City and Jackson County officials on a sunny afternoon at Minor Park dedicated the Martha Truman connector, a new segment of the Blue River Trail linking Minor Park to Martha Truman Road.
James Wong, deputy director of Parks and Recreation, opened the ceremony and described the connector as "a small but important piece of the Blue River Trail system," saying the completed trail is intended to span from the Blue River headwaters in Johnson County, Kansas, to the confluence with the Missouri River in Kansas City, Missouri.
Wong announced the project received the Metro Green Visionary Award from the Kansas Western chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and thanked city leadership, park staff and contractors for their roles in delivering the connector.
Councilwoman Andrea Buu (Sixth District at-large) said the project was partially funded by Sixth District funds (program name not specified in the transcript) and emphasized accessibility and resident input in planning. "This is more than just a nature trail. This is an accessible outdoor recreation and is just the first step in our goal to connect our trail system here in South Kansas City," Buu said.
City Manager Mario Vasquez thanked council members and staff and described the connector as the fulfillment of a multi-decade regional vision. He said Kansas City secured funding streams and partnered with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and Jackson County to advance planning, design and construction.
Michelle Newman of Jackson County Parks and Recreation recounted the long-standing county–city partnership, tracing park and trail work back to earlier efforts in the 1930s and land acquisitions in the 1960s and 1970s. She highlighted earlier collaborations including a 2003 Blue River Trail project and a 2023 shared-use trail connection.
Organizers publicly thanked project staff and partners, including project manager Jessica Blackwell, design consultant QK and contractor CM Concrete, before ceremonial ribbon cutting concluded the program.
The dedication marks the official opening of this connector segment; officials said the work advances regional trail connectivity and complements other ongoing trail projects in the Metro Green Plan.
