Steuart Park construction restarts after federal and state clearances

Bowmont staff told council June 2 that federal and state historic‑preservation reviewers have cleared Steuart Park work and the city has permission to resume earth‑disturbing activities. The clearance letter found no historic significance that would block construction.

City staff completed limited weed abatement and immediately notified the contractor that site mobilization and construction could resume. The city expects approximately six months to finish phase one and will assemble the phase‑two bid package during that time so the two phases can sequence with minimal delay. Staff thanked state and federal partners and consultants whose expedited reports and coordination helped secure clearance.

Council asked whether portions of the park could open earlier; staff said they would re‑examine phasing and attempt to make safe sections available if feasible. Councilors also expressed appreciation for the intergovernmental coordination that cleared the way for construction to continue.
