Council authorizes settlement in long-running Verizon tax litigation

The council authorized borough counsel to finalize and execute a stipulation of settlement in the long-running Verizon tax litigation.

Council members said the litigation addressed whether the borough properly collected property taxes on the value of Verizon's wires and that the borough’s counsel successfully defended collections for many years. Counsel advised the borough that a crossover period beginning around 2016 required review; the resolution authorizes counsel to finalize a settlement that preserves the borough’s position and allows the borough to keep taxes it collected for the period at issue.
